A Journey through the industry

Two Decades, One Sector, A Wealth of Insight

Carl joined CLEAN with more than twenty years of experience in the laundry and workwear sector behind him, having previously held roles at Johnsons, Elis, Initial, and Alexandra Workwear. By the time the opportunity at CLEAN came up, he was not actively looking to move.

What changed his mind was a familiar name. Having crossed paths with Darren Blackbird before, Carl spotted the opening shortly after Darren's appointment as Sales Director for Workwear and was drawn by the chance to grow within a business with serious ambition.

"It felt like the right team, the right time, and the right opportunity to keep developing."

Making An Impact At CLEAN

Carl develops new business across hospitality, food production, engineering, and aerospace, working a forty-mile radius from his Cheltenham base that takes in Bristol as a key target market. His approach is firmly relationship-led, built on understanding what customers actually need rather than pushing what is easiest to sell.

In his first thirteen months, he has already achieved more than ninety percent of his target and built a strong pipeline of prospects. He is candid about the challenges in the workwear industry: the declining UK manufacturing base and competitors who often resort to unsustainable pricing to retain clients. CLEAN's superior garment tracking systems and dedicated, customer-focused service are the differentiators he leans on.

Bringing Fresh Ideas To The Table

💡 THE IDEA PITCHED AT INTERVIEW

THE CLEAN SHEET INITIATIVE

A community sponsorship concept that pairs the brand with a local football club, sponsoring "clean sheets" to build brand visibility and engage with the community. Carl conceptualised the idea during his job interview. It is now in its initial phase, with strong potential to expand to other clubs and regions.

Carl is not someone to stand still. Even before his first day, he was already thinking about how CLEAN could show up in the local community in a more visible way.

It is a small example of a bigger pattern. Carl looks for ways to create value beyond the immediate sale, whether that is through a community link, a fresh marketing angle, or simply a more creative way to introduce CLEAN to a new prospect.

Life outside of work

A Full and Active Life

Away from the world of workwear, Carl leads a full and active life. He spends quality time with his son, sharing a passion for football, and can often be found enjoying good food or laughing at a comedy gig.

Showing his commitment to community causes and a willingness to step out of his comfort zone, Carl has even taken part in a charity boxing match. It is a fitting reminder that the same drive he brings to building customer relationships extends well beyond the working day.

Carl Abbott Wartime Story

★ DID YOU KNOW?

Carl's grandfather was a bit of a wartime graffiti artist. While serving, he carved the family name "Abbott" into the top of a pyramid. It is a brilliant story that shows the same curiosity and character Carl brings when connecting with people today.

Advice from thirteen months in

Carl credits CLEAN's supportive culture for helping him settle quickly and start delivering. His advice for anyone joining the business is direct and practical, drawn from his own experience hitting the ground running.

Carl's advice for new starters

Embrace challenges. The hardest accounts often teach you the most.

Be proactive. Do not wait for opportunities to come to you, go and find them.

Lean on the supportive culture. Ask questions and tap into the experience around you.

Build trust before you build pipeline. Strong relationships make everything else easier.

Bring your ideas. Good thinking gets noticed, even from day one.
