Table linen - the hygiene saviour that’s more important than ever

Posted on Jul 30, 2020

Often cited as a bold design choice, naked tables are now popular in many restaurants and cafés all over the world. In recent years, it has become trendy even for expensive and exclusive dining establishments to serve meals on bare tabletops, foregoing crisp and pristine table linen to give the illusion of modern and sleek design.

There is an issue with this trend, however. Recent studies have shown that tabletops are one of the least hygienic areas in a restaurant, and even with all the stringent cleaning procedures in place post-COVID, it is likely that bare tables can be a breeding ground for harmful, tiny bacteria. Tables may look clean to the naked eye, but just because they have been wiped down does not mean they are completely sanitised, and cross contamination could still happen.

The are many benefits of using hygienically cleaned and reusable table linen and napkins, especially at the current time of strict rules and regulations. As table linens are changed after every meal, the number of bacteria a guest is subjected to is dramatically reduced. A freshly laundered tablecloth provides a certain assurance to diners that a table is clean and safe to use, reducing the fears many people have when it comes to eating out at this time. Fresh linen also makes it easier for staff to know that a table has been thoroughly cleaned and is ready for new guests to be seated.

There is something very special about being seated at a table with soft, crisp and finely pressed linen. Cloth linens have the power to set the mood in any establishment, providing an atmosphere of muted elegance – in fact, linens help soak up both spills and noise from a bustling restaurant.

Equally important: reusable linen is far more sustainable than its disposable counterparts, especially if they are laundered correctly. It is estimated that each guest uses an average of five paper napkins when eating out, whilst most guests only use one reusable napkin. Reusable linen therefore leads to less waste, and it is better for the environment.
